Winter Shelters & Backcountry Safety
Saturday, February 11th-
Sunday, 12th, 2017
In this class you will be introduced to skills necessary to providing oneself (groups as well) protection and care in a winter landscape for several days and beyond.
We will cover winter emergency shelter designs (when and why to use them), lost proofing, winter food sources, foul weather fire making, temperature management, and much more!
On Saturday evening we'll enjoy stories, conversation, and hardy food by the fire. Sunday morning we'll greet the day with a warm & nutritious breakfast, tales of shelter-sleeping, and winter tracking.
This is a wonderful event for individuals, outdoor educators, and group leaders alike!!
* This class is open to adults & teens accompanied by an adult.
Winter in the northeast is a world unto itself. Its is stark and sometimes, otherworldly, yet still so full of life.
Many of us manage the cold and dark by staying active in the outdoors. Hiking, backpacking, downhill skiing/snowboarding, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling are all activities that give us joy in the winter. However, all too often the thin veil of fun and safety gives way to harrowing experiences in the winter nights. We need not look far to find a news story of someone who has found themselves in a survival type situation, exposed to the winter temperatures.
