Capital Mushroom Apprenticeship
September 8th - November 9th 2018
The Kingdom Fungi is vast and curious. Entering this world can both be an exciting and daunting endeavor. However, developing the skills to successfully identify mushrooms leads to a lifetime of enjoyment.
Whether you're interested in adding foraged mushrooms to the dinner table, harnessing the incredible power of mushrooms as medicine, or have a keen interest in fungal ecology, this series will provide you with the tools and skill to move forward.
'Mushrooms of Northeast North America'
Capital Mushroom Apprenticeship is designed to provide you with the fundamental skills necessary to confidently identify the many mushrooms encountered in our forests and beyond. This series will include Edible species, Toxicity & Poisonings, Medicinal species (myco-medicinals), Fungal Ecology, Myco-medicinal preparation and preservation, utilitarian uses of fungi, as well as collection protocol and gathering ethics.
Along with class meetings (field/foray time) participants will receive a monthly Myco-Package of updated mushroom sightings, informative myco-insights, and course material to keep you on track and honing your skills of identification.
Classes will meet monthly from July through October. The series kicks off with a 'classroom' style presentation, 'Mushrooms of the Northeast' at the Pine Hollow rboretum. The Forays (Mushroom Walks) will give us the opportunity to explore some local natural areas and practice our field identification skills together.
Our final class together, Myco-Medicinals (Mushroom Medicine), will provide you with hands-on knowledge of how to prepare and store medicinal mushrooms for personal use along with the incredible medicinal attributes of some of our local mushrooms.
